Electron–drag effects in coupled electron systems

چکیده
The advancement of fabrication and lithography techniques of semiconductors have made it possible to study bi–layer systems made of two electronic layers separated by distances of several hundred Angstroms. In this situation the electrons in layer 1 are distinguishable from those in layer 2, and can communicate through the direct inter–layer Coulomb interaction. In particular, if a current is applied to one of the layers, the electrons in the second will be dragged giving rise to a transresistance ρD. In this article we review recent theoretical and experimental developments in the understanding of this effect. At very low temperatures it turns out that phonons dominate the transresistance. The direct Coulomb interaction and plasmon excitations are important at temperatures T > 0.1TF , with TF the Fermi temperature. If a magnetic field is applied the transresistance is increased, in a very interesting interplay between ρD and Landau quantization. The non–dissipative drag is also reviewed.

This review article is about the role of electron-electron interactions in low dimensional systems and its transport properties in nano-structures. It begins with a review of the pair-distribution function theory of electron liquid systems taking into account the electron-electron interactions. We extend the theory for highly correlated system such two- and one-dimensional electron liquids. We...
متن کاملQuantum phase transitions in capacitively coupled two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays
Quantum phase transitions in two layers of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other, are investigated. As the inter-layer capacitance is increased, the system at zero temperature is found to exhibit an insulator-to-superconductor transition. It is shown that, unlike in the case for one-dimensional arrays with a similar coupling configuration, the transition cannot be...
متن کاملCoulomb Drag in the Extreme Quantum Limit
Coulomb drag resulting from interlayer electron-electron scattering in double layer 2D electron systems in a high magnetic field has been measured. Within the lowest Landau level the observed drag resistance exceeds its zero magnetic value by factors of typically 1000. At half-filling of the lowest Landau level in each layer (n 1y2) the data suggest that our bilayer systems are much more stro...
متن کاملCoulomb drag mechanisms in graphene.
Recent measurements revealed an anomalous Coulomb drag in graphene, hinting at new physics at charge neutrality. The anomalous drag is explained by a new mechanism based on energy transport, which involves interlayer energy transfer, coupled to charge flow via lateral heat currents and thermopower. The old and new drag mechanisms are governed by distinct physical effects, resulting in starkly d...

We study the Coulomb drag rate for electrons in a double-quantumwell st~ct~e taking into account the el~tron-optimal phon~n interactions. The full wave vector and frequency dependent random-phase approximation (RPA) at finite temperature is employed to describe the effective interlayer Coulomb interaction. The electron-electron and electron-optical phonon couplings are treated on an equal footi...
